WHAT IS DOING DRAMATURGY?
Doing Dramaturgy is an intimate online professional development course for a small group of mid-career choreographers and performance makers who want to deepen, challenge and re-energise their creative practice.
Drawing on over two decades of working as a dramaturg alongside world-class choreographers and theatre makers, Lou Cope offers a rare opportunity to step inside the craft of dramaturgy and dramaturgical thinking.
This is a space to think, question, experiment and reconnect with what matters most in your practice, in the company of other experienced and curious makers.
HOW DOES THE COURSE WORK?
Delivered live on Zoom, the course is designed to fit alongside the realities of busy creative lives, offering dedicated time to reflect, make, share and grow without having to travel.
Through a series of dynamic, practical and thought-provoking sessions, you'll work closely with Lou and fellow artists to:

deepen your creative practice and reconnect with your artistic purpose

develop confidence in the craft and practice of dramaturgy

reflect on and refine your making processes

explore structure, composition, form, content and context

bring questions, challenges and works-in-progress into a supportive environment

learn through generous conversation, shared experience and critical dialogue

build meaningful relationships with a community of fellow makers from around the world
WHAT DOES IT INCLUDE?
Throughout the course you'll receive both personal guidance and collaborative learning, including:

A bespoke one-to-one introductory session with Lou

Six days of live online learning

Practical teaching, insights and provocations from Lou

Sessions that respond and adapt to the interests and needs of the group

Creative exercises and between-session tasks (approximately 8 hours in total)

Collaborative discussions and practical exchanges in pairs and small groups
-
Opportunities to practise dramaturgy by working as a dramaturg with fellow participants

Individual reflection alongside shared group learning

Ongoing dramaturgical support from Lou throughout the course

A one-to-one closing debrief with Lou to reflect on your learning and next steps

This course is for choreographers and performance makers who are ready to invest in their artistic development.
Whether you're looking to refresh your practice, gain fresh perspective on your making, reconnect with your creative questions, or cultivate a deeper relationship with dramaturgical thinking, Doing Dramaturgy offers a rich and supportive space to do that work.
You'll leave with new tools, fresh perspectives, lasting connections and a renewed sense of confidence in your own creative practice.

9/10/11/12 Feb Initial 1:1 90 min session
Thurs 25 & Fri 26 Feb 10 – 4pm
Wed 24 & Thurs 25 March 10 – 4pm (NB: Fri 26 is Good Friday)
Thurs 22 & Fri 23 April 10 – 4pm
5/6/7 May 1:1 Debrief 60 min session
HOW MUCH?
Course fees are £1250 (inc VAT) per participant.
We have a limited number of early bird tickets available at £1100 (inc VAT) offered to those suitable, who applied first. Places are selling fast, book yours ASAP to avoid disappointment.
We would also like to offer a limited number of discounted places (At £1100) to artists who are from under-represented backgrounds. This might include race, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity. We ask you to self identify, and to please tick the relevant box on the application form.

FUNDING YOUR PLACE
There are various ways you can apply for financial support towards your place.

PAYMENT
We ask for a non-refundable deposit of 20% (£220 for an early bird ticket or discounted place / £250 for a full price) to secure your place on the course and full payment to be made by Monday 10 January 2027.
