WHAT IS DOING DRAMATURGY?

This online intensive professional development course, with limited places for mid-career choreographers and performance makers, draws on Lou Cope’s 2 decade career of working as a dramaturg with world class choreographers and theatre makers.

HOW DOES THE COURSE WORK?

The course is virtual, led over Zoom, to slot into the busy lives of choreographers and makers, to accompany and support them in their practice.

Working through a variety of dynamic and engaging sessions, participants will work with Lou and each other to:

  • deepen their practice and mission

  • practise the craft and act of dramaturgy

  • examine their making strategies

  • explore structure, composition, form, content and context

  • share experience, questions and challenges

  • build relationships with each other

WHAT DOES IT INCLUDE?

  • 1 to 1 bespoke and personal initial session with Lou

  • 6 days of online course

  • Direct content delivery from Lou

  • Focussed sessions tailored and adapted to group needs and objectives

  • A wide range of exercises and tasks, including homework between sessions (approx 8 hours in total)

  • Collaboration and discussion with other choreographers and makers in pairs and groups

  • The opportunity to explore dramaturgy by acting as a dramaturg for other participants

  • Solo work with group reflections

  • Being ‘dramaturged’ by Lou throughout

  • 1 to 1 debrief with Lou

It's been of massive value to me, dymystifying what dramaturgy is, how it's applied and what its purpose and impact can be. I've loved getting under the skin of it, really understanding how it works and what it bring to a process and performance. Rhiannon White - Common Wealth Theatre UK - 2025 Participant

Listening  to Lou and all her knowledge was really inspiring and this course is created in a way to really push your artistic practice and you as a person. I feel every artist should engage in this course in fact it should be compulsory every few years as a sort of self check in. Rachel Erdos - Israel - 2025 Participant
